Acupuncture

To many in the west acupuncture and its workings seems strange and even alien, but in fact, its fundamental theory is far less fanciful when we consider all the other processes going on around us. We all know that electricity travels thousands of miles along cables and wire and fuels a multitude of devices in our homes – even though we never see it. We are also aware that mobile phones and computers are now capable of transferring huge amounts of information invisibly and remotely across not only the planet but even out into space and back. All this we are aware of, and yet we still find it hard to believe that the human body, by far the most amazing, complex and awe inspiring creation of all, could have developed its own invisible network through which to feed and inform the body. Acupuncture shows us our own internal wireless networks, gives us access to the world wide web of our bodies and allows us to influence and heal the physical and emotional workings of our personal lives by affecting the very stuff of life itself.

Acupuncture works excellently alongside Western Medicine, but it can also get to those places that Western Medicine finds it hard to reach. This is because it can make sense of seemingly random symptoms and get to the root cause of illness. Acupuncture treatment can also be used to prevent disease and is excellent at improving general health and well being.

What should I expect from Acupuncture

At your first acupuncture treatment a full case history will be taken. This will involve extensive questioning, not only with regards to your main complaint, but also other areas of your general health. This stage of the process is vital as it allows your practitioner to gain a full and detailed picture of your current state of health. With this information she will design a treatment plan that can positively impact all areas of your health, including sleep, appetite and your general sense of well being, along with your main complaint.

Chinese diagnosis also places emphasis on the condition of both the pulses and the tongue, so you practitioner, will also assess these. If you have a specific physical complaint, this my also be examined.

Once treatment begins, very fine, single use, sterile needles will be inserted into the carefully chosen points. Your acupuncturist will talk you through everything as you go along, so you are always fully informed. Having acupuncture, is nothing like having and injection or giving blood. The sensation that is felt with correct acupuncture needle insertion, ranges from a dull ache, to a mild electric shock. There can also be a gentle pulling felling as the Qi in the channels is accessed. The Chinese describe this as being like 'a fish tugging on a line'. All of these sensations are perfectly normal and helpful indications that the energy in the channels is being positively  affected. If an individuals Qi is particularly deficient or blocked it may take several treatments before this sensation is pronounced. It is important that you let you practitioner know what you are feeling.

Within the meridian system many of the most powerful points are on the lower legs and lower arms. Therefore, it is very likely that your acupuncturist will want to use points in these areas.  It is helpful if you can wear clothing which makes these areas easy to access.

Most of the time needles will be inserted at the beginning of the session and left in for between 10 to 30 minutes. However, your acupuncturist may also do points at the end of the session that are not retained. The difference is that needles that are left in are clearing out blockages and stagnation, where as the needles that are in and out are strengthening deficiencies. Sometimes, your practitioner may want to see the effect of the clearing needles on your pulses before they choose which points to use to strengthen the underlying imbalance.
